Hypertrophic osteoarthropathy: two unusual causes.

Two patients with hypertrophic osteoarthropathy of unusual aetiology are described. The first patient developed the condition in association with oesophageal carcinoma and the second as a complication of active pulmonary tuberculosis. In the second case, substantial resorption of new bone was seen following treatment.

Hypertrophic osteoarthropathy in association with pulmonary tuberculosis.

Three white male patients with advanced cavitary pulmonary tuberculosis presented with HOA. No other pathology to explain the osteoarthropathy was detected. The osteoarthropathy responded symptomatically to NSAI drugs and treatment of tuberculosis but resolved radiologically in only one patient.

Pyloric obstruction due to gastric tuberculosis

A 22 year old male presented with symptoms of gastric outlet obstruction. Endoscopy showed a hypertrophic nodular lesion around the pyloric opening with pyloric stenosis. The endoscopic biopsy and histopathological examination revealed tuberculosis involving the stomach, an extremely rare lesion.
